The next day I decided to go for a walk on Hitchcock Trail located in lush green Oakly Park. I knew the trail well enough that I could look around without stumbling. The pines turned into beach trees which turned into oaks. “Hmm? I don’t see any more birds, but I do see two gray squirrels playing tag on a huge red oak, just before the bridge.”

As I walked toward the wooden planked footbridge which spanned Sarah’s Pond, I recalled it was named in memory of Sarah Westingham. She and her parents were picnicking near the pond several years ago. According to the local paper, her parents were setting up the food on the grass when they looked up and she was gone. A search party was quickly formed by Jeff, our local Sheriff. There must have been people looking for weeks, but she was never found. No one knew what happened, except that Sarah disappeared. Some say she got lost in the woods. Others said she fell into the pond and drowned. I’ve heard stories of people who come down to the pond to fish and they could hear the sounds of a little girl’s happy giggles. “I’ve never heard it in all the times I’ve been here.” I said as I began to walk across the bridge.

“He, he, he.”

“What was that?” I said as I spun quickly around looking in all directions.

“He, he, he.”

“Hm. It sounds like a small child. No.” I held tightly onto the rope guides which spanned the bridge and turned all the way around again, looking for the sound or where it came from. I still didn’t see anything. “Okay,” I resolved, “It’s my imagination.” A quick peek behind me and I continued to walk across the small foot bridge. A few steps from the end I noticed one of the wooden planks had come loose. “I have to leave a note in the ranger’s box at the entrance to the park,” I said to myself. Sheriff Jeff had the box installed when he became Sheriff. You can’t miss it. It’s bright yellow and stands about four feet high at the entrance to the park. Whenever there’s a possible hazard like a low hanging or dead limb near the trails or a lot of loose gravel on the trail or something, we put a note in the box. Then once a week Sheriff Jeff or one of his deputies collect the notes. They notify Ranger Sharon T. and she takes care of it. Ranger Sharon T. also stocks the pond with trout and walleyes for fishing. I really don’t like trout. It has too many bones and not enough meat. But during the year, usually only the locals will fish Sarah’s Pond.
